The City of Weyburn 2012 Clean up Committee held its final meeting on June 12 at City Hall.

As a result of the Residential Judging that was done on June 1, Area 1 was declared the Best Improved Area winner. Area 5 was runner up. The Clean up judges found great improvements throughout the city.

"Front lane pick up of garbage carts has surely been a contributing factor in this improvement," said City of Weyburn Clean up Committee Chair, Jesse Watamanuk.

After receiving no responses to advertising for Area Chairmen, the Committee discussed whether or not to continue with efforts of recruiting Area Chairmen for future Campaigns.

Other options discussed included choosing an annual 'Clean-Up Target'as a theme, such as cleaning of alleys or trimming of foliage from sidewalks, with nominations to be submitted by the residents of Weyburn.

It was also suggested that the areas be divided according to school zones, as opposed to garbage collection zones, as has been done in the past. The students would be asked to participate in an 'Adopt a Neighbourhood' campaign, in which they would compete for prizes by cleaning the school zone for which they have chosen to assume responsibility.

This topic will be discussed further at the first meeting of the 2013 Campaign, to be held in April.

Posters created by elementary school students were judged on June 1 as well, with the winning students receiving prizes. Participation from the schools was low again this year, so the Committee would like to see the schools approached earlier in the year for future campaigns, which should allow teachers more time to have their students participate.

Only 545 free landfill use coupons were redeemed this year, which is down a bit from past years.
