The Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes for Weyburn will take place on Sunday, Nov. 13, starting at the City Centre Mall. This event raises funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Registration starts at noon, and the walk begins at 1 p.m. There will be drinks and snacks provided at rest stops, and entertainment and a barbecue lunch.

This event is also an opportunity to raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes, raise funds to continue JDRF-funded research, and is a day of fun and fitness for participating residents.

This is only the third year that Weyburn has hosted a Walk to Cure Diabetes event. Organizer Trina Kopec noted that the walk had increased by 50 participants last year, from its first year in 2009.

The 2010 Weyburn Walk also won the Telus Walk Award for Program Excellence in the category of $1 to $199,000. In total, participants raised $25,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

For Trina, the walk means more as her son Holden Duncan-Kopec has Type 1 diabetes, and will speak at the event. "The more stuff he does in this way, the closer he gets to not having any needles," said Trina.
