Where are they now? Catching up with Lyndon King

Combining business and passion for golf
Where are they now
Lyndon King at White Bear Golf course

Lyndon, known as “Kinger” by everyone, visited friends and family in the Moose Mountains this past labour day weekend. Born and raised in Wawota, King graduated from high school there and then managed the Skyline Motor Inn in the mid 1980’s. He operated King’s Department Store in the 1990’s and in 1998 opened Royalty Drycleaners on Railway Avenue in Carlyle. In 2002, that business was sold to Arlen and Jodie Third. Later that year, his love of golf lured him to Victoria, B.C.

“I have always loved the game” said King, “and I felt it was a great way to to combine my experience in business and my passion for golf.” Lyndon enrolled in the Professional Golf Management Course at Camosun College on the Island. Three years later, he graduated with a Dean’s Award and became a Golf Professional. During and after graduating, Kinger was employed as a Manager with Golf B.C. and worked at both Olympic View and Arbutus Ridge. Many local area golfers visited him there over those years.

“In 2008, I decided to look for a different challenge and with daughter Cora living in Calgary, applied for a couple of jobs there. In March of 2009, I landed a job at Collicut Siding Golf Course at Crossfield.” Kinger is still there today and his job title reads General Manager/ Head Golf Professional.  Since Lyndon arrived there, a new clubhouse has been built and the course has transformed itself into a great 18 hole track. In just over 12 years, King has increased round counts three fold and revenue five fold. They have a great junior golf program with often 1000 youngsters registered each year. In 2019 he was awarded with the PGA of Alberta Junior Leader of the Year award. With the assistance of local Optimist Clubs, a new 3 hole “little loop” course was recently opened for children and Special Olympians.

“At the present time, I am satisfied with my current job but am always on the lookout for new opportunities. I love challenges and if something comes up, one never knows!” Cora is Lyndon’s only child and he has two grandchildren, Jasper and Lakelynn.  Kinger and partner Janet love travelling during the winter and Las Vegas and Nashville are two of their favourite destinations. A Saskatchewan boy at heart, King is happy to return to his roots as often as possible. “It was great seeing a lot of you again!,” says King. “If you are ever out to Alberta, please be sure to stop in and visit. Always happy to see a friendly face!”
