Realtor Winston Bailey is the newest member of city council, after more than doubling his nearest competition to win the city byelection on Wednesday.

Bailey came in with 538 votes, while Melanie Sorensen had 245, Cory Harkness had 231, Cam Weber had 65 votes and Andrew Kerr had 42.

With 67 ballots cast in the advance and mobile polls, and 1,054 on voting day, there were a total of 1,121 votes cast, or a turnout of 14.9 per cent of eligible voters.

Reached Wednesday evening, Bailey said he was "elated and overwhelmed" at winning the byelection, and admits he has a steep learning curve since he's joining council in the middle of their term.

He said he will spend his first while on council learning the ropes and getting up to speed on the issues, as well as learning what committee responsibilities he will be getting.

The byelection was held to replace Dave Craigen, who resigned in March due to personal and medical reasons.
