Young Fellows raise $50k at TV Auction

The Weyburn Young Fellows had another successful TV and Internet Auction on April 30, raising approximately $50,000 for the community.

The Weyburn Young Fellows had another successful TV and Internet Auction on April 30, raising approximately $50,000 for the community.

Auction Chair Justin Arendt said that the amount raised is similar to previous years but one thing that has changed is the online component of their fundraising auction.

"The online component really dominated this year," said Arendt. "People were bidding on Blackberry's and Tablets. We saw more activity on that web server than ever before."

With 350 bidders submitting about 5,500 bids, Arendt said that close to 200 of these bidders made their bids online.

Arendt said they saw much less of the public at the Weyburn Comprehensive School, where the TV Auction was held, than in previous years, partially due to the storm. The storm also made it difficult for out-of-town folks to come to the auction site and the loss of power also created a rift in the program.

"We actually had fire alarms going off right at 12 p.m. when it started and again at 5 p.m. because of the power outages, so we had to evacuate for a bit," said Arendt.

Arendt said that despite the glitches, he was impressed to see the community bidding as rapidly as they did.
