Almost 400 former Red Wing players, supporters and friends gathered in Weyburn last weekend to celebrate a special milestone for the local SJHL Jr. A hockey club. Young and a bit older gathered at the Weyburn Curling Rink, Weyburn Golf Course and the arena to share stories of glory and humour.

The weekend event was capped off by a wonderful steak supper Saturday night followed by a cabaret which went on through the wee-hours Sunday morning before they congregated once more to say their farewells at a pancake breakfast at the curling rink.

Coach Dwight McMillan and Hockey Operations G.M. Ron Rumball shared some light-hearted and poignant moments from the past as well as sharing some insight into the future of the popular Weyburn Red Wings.

Mayor Debra Button was on hand to bring greetings from the City as well as buttering up her husband Greg for allegedly putting a dent in a certain Corvette.

SJHL President Bill Chow brought greetings on behalf of the other SJHL clubs and reminisced about other glory days. Chow went on to explain how important the Red Wings have become and their drive for excellence both on and off the ice.

Wings' President Ryan Williams thanked everyone involved in making this event happen and thanked those who graciously donated time and merchandise for the special weekend.

While there were those who wished that more of the mid 90's and later Wings would have made the trek, they were not disappointed. Players like Darcy Verot, who now plays in the Russian Premier League, along with many of the 1984 Centennial Cup winning team did attend the event.

Weyburn's first home game albeit pre-season will be September 16 when the Yorkton Terriers come to town.
