Arcola Skating Club is proud to announce that two of their skaters received awards at Skate Canada Saskatchewan's Annual General Meeting Banquet held April 28th in Regina. Six year old Kyra Donahue received Saskatchewan's CanSkater of the Year Award, and Sixteen Year Old Juliana Schlenker received Saskatchewan's StarSkater of the Year Award.

Here are some notes from their nominations.

Kyra Donahue:

Criteria:

Each skater must be eight years of age or under. They must demonstrate: Self-confidence, determination and a positive attitude. A natural ability/talent coupled with a passion for skating. These skaters will hae the desire to continue and succeed in skating. An eagerness to learn new skills and to improve. An awareness of physical fitness. The skater pursues an active lifestyle off-ice, is involved in other sports gaining the physical literacy needed to enhance their on-ice skating skills and abilities. An understanding of the rules of fair play and cooperation. Is completely engaged in the fun and interactive on-ice environment and participates fully in all activities.

From Trish (Mother): Outside of skating Kyra plays baseball in the spring, camping, hiking bike riding and checking out the nature in the summer.Kyra loves to help in the kitchen cooking and cleaning.

From Dawn (Coach): Kyra is a huge delight to coach, her determination for excellence is admirable. She comes to skating very excited to learn and with a huge smile on her face with nearly perfect attendance. She gives her true 100% with every element. She doesn't ever give up, will try and try again until she gets the idea of something she's just learnt. Her attention to detail and confidence is like no other. She is very caring to everyone around her; the other skaters, the PA's, coaches and even the parents off the ice. She listens and pays complete attention although the other skaters around her sometimes do not. Every day she comes onto the ice and makes sure she says "hello" to all the PA's as well as myself (the coach). She usually has a element or something she has been working on to share with you. This goes to show that she cares about her skating and skates on her own whenever possible. Last spring she travelled over 30 minutes to a off-season skating school for extra skating lessons. She was hard to get off the ice when her time was up, always practicing and watching the other/older skaters around her trying different elements that she saw them working on. Kyra is a huge thrill to coach with a natural skating ability and determination.

Juliana Schlenker:

Criteria: Participation, Achievement, Personal Success, Display Spirit & Passion for the Sport, Strive for New Goals, Achieve Balance within skating and in other areas of life, and Giving back to their sport by assisting at club level.

From Marla (Mother): Juliana continues to play guitar and sing although she is no longer able to take lessons with no teacher in the area, she is featured on the website for "The Happy Nun Café" under open mic night. Track and Field is also important to Juliana, she excels at triple jump and long jump. In the fall season she plays school volleyball.

From Dawn (Coach): Juliana is such a thrill to coach, she has become such a positive polite young lady. She gives her 100% when skating and in lessons. She sets goals and does what it takes to achieve them. She is a huge asset to myself as well as the skating club and her community. She is a active PA as well as a huge help with the younger StarSkaters helping them out by teaching them their new skills/dance, solo choreography as well as giving them pointers on their jumps and spins. She is a excellent role model for all the other StarSkaters, they all look up to her and love to watch her skate. She is a excellent demonstrator for any skill I ask. She fully participates and at times runs activities both on and off ice with the Arcola Skating Club.
