Beavers split first two games

The Weyburn Beavers split their first two games of the Western Major Baseball League season.Weyburn scored three times in the sixth inning to win 5-4 on the road over the Moose Jaw Millers on May 31 in the Beavers' first game of the season.

The Weyburn Beavers split their first two games of the Western Major Baseball League season.Weyburn scored three times in the sixth inning to win 5-4 on the road over the Moose Jaw Millers on May 31 in the Beavers' first game of the season. The Beavers opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, and they also scored once in the seventh. Brady Adamek picked up the win with one run against and four strikeouts in five innings. Brad Grinstead paced the Beavers offence with two hits and a run batted in. The Beavers dropped their home opener 6-5 to the Yorkton Cardinals on June 2. Weyburn scored all five of their runs in the sixth inning to rally from a 5-0 deficit and tie the game at 5-5. Three singles and two bases loaded walks provided the offence for Weyburn.But Yorkton responded in the seventh inning with what proved to be the winning run. Dillon Yeaman had a pair of hits, a run, and a run batted in for the Beavers. Starter Taylor Henry allowed five runs, and struck out three, in six innings of work. Yorkton also had three runs in the first inning, and a run in each of the second and third innings, to take the 5-0 lead. The Beavers also played in an intersquad game June 1 in Estevan. Weyburn players were divided into two teams. Members of the Southeast Royals Midget AAA team rounded out the rosters. The Blue team beat the Grey team 10-9. Weyburn will visit the Melville Millionaires on June 4 and the Regina Red Sox on June 5. Then they begin their longest home-stand of the season. The defending champion Okotoks Dawgs are in Weyburn on June 6 and 7. Game times are at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.The Swift Current Indians visit at 7 p.m. on June 8, and the Red Sox are in Weyburn at 7 p.m. on June 10.
