Carlyle Curling Club to host Senior Men's Southern Championship

Summary:

Carlyle Curling Club is set to host the Affinity Credit Union Senior Men's Southern Championship from Feb. 9 to 12, 2012. The club, which was approached by the Saskatchewan Curling Association to host the regional playoffs, is looking forward to hosting the event.

The playdowns will see a total of 16 curling teams come together from across southern Saskatchewan to compete for one of the four southern spots available at the Provincial Playdowns to be held in Foam Lake from Feb. 22 to 26.

Myrla Holland, one of the organizers of the event, said that the board is looking forward to hosting the event. "We have known for some time that Carlyle was to host the playdowns and were pleased that the Curling Club Board had agreed to do that, because it speaks to their vision for the future of Carlyle Curling Club."

Holland stated that it is important to host events such as these playdowns for a number of reasons including: "to support the sport of curling in our province, to support our local club and community by providing a venue for teams and fans from other places to spend some time and money in our club and our community, and to encourage all local people to enjoy the exercise, fellowship and fun of curling. Curling is a lifelong sport and can be played from the age of eight to 80 plus, and we want to show the people of the community that they have a facility here that can meet their curling needs no matter what their age."

"Individuals can get involved here the same way as any other community event," said Holland. "Just let the organizers know that they would like to help! The other thing they can do is agree to help if the organizers happen to call them with a request for help."

"We have done a bit of a calculation to date and know that we will need well over 220 volunteer hours at the event alone. That's not counting planning and preparation ahead of time. There is a core group of about 10 people who are involved in the planning - that means four meetings plus all the leg work to make the plans happen - but they will definitely not be able to do all the work at the event by themselves. We have had a few people who have volunteered for the event, but we can always use more."

"A special thank you to all of those people who have volunteered to date and to those who will volunteer in the future. Every event that the community hosts is successful only to the degree that people get behind it and give an hour or two of their time to get it done. Organizers realize that everyone is extremely busy because the organizers are just as busy, and so they really do appreciate everyone who volunteers.

For those interested in assisting with the event, you are encouraged to contact the event coordinators Kent and Myrla Holland at 453-6087 or km.holland@sasktel.net. Individuals can also contact Kirk Himmelspach, the president of the Curling Club or others who they know are involved in organizing the event.
