University of Regina women's hockey head coach Sarah Hodges recently announced that highly regarded Warner Hockey School product Alexis Larson has signed a CIS Letter of Intent and will join the Cougars for the 2012-13 season.
Larson, a 5'5"defenceman, had five points in 25 regular season games to help Warner to a second-place finish in the Junior Women's Hockey League's West Division this season and was a key part of the Warriors' run in the playoffs which saw them advance to the JWHL championship game. She also participated in the 2012 JWHL All-Star Game.
"Alexis is the type of student-athlete that will make an impact on our program both on and off the ice," Hodges said. "Offensively, she's able to take control of the game with her skating and her vision. She has really developed the defensive part of her game while at Warner to become a great two-way player. Alexis is a winner who brings maturity and charisma and is the type of person who will help draw other top student-athletes to our program."
During the 2010-11 campaign, Larson had 12 points in 27 games for the Warriors as they finished in fourth place in their division. Larson was coached by former National Hockey League forward Mikko Makela both seasons at Warner.
Larson also has extensive provincial team experience. She participated with Team Saskatchewan at the National Women's Under-18 Championship three times. She participated as the youngest player and one of just three 1994-born players at the 2008 tournament in Greater Napanee, Ont. Larson also played at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, helping Team Saskatchewan to a fourth-place finish at the 10-team event.
Larson played with the Weyburn Gold Wings in the SFMHL for two years prior to her two seasons at Warner. She collected six points as a 14-year-old during the 2008-09 season and led the team's blueliners with 17 points in 26 games in 2009-10. Larson was a teammate of incoming U of R goaltender Toni Ross with the Gold Wings.
