Cougars down 1-0 in provincial finals

The Estevan Baxter midget A Cougars girls' hockey team is in a hole in their provincial final series against the Canwood Canucks.

The first game ended in a 3-1 loss to the Canucks, as the Cougars were unable to take advantage of home ice on Sunday at the Civic.

The Cougars fell behind early in the first period and were unable to mount enough of an offensive attack to make a comeback. The first goal against came 4:17 into the first period. Just past the midway point of the opening frame they fell behind 2-0.

Amata Poirier was in goal for the Cougars and was able to keep her team in the game but the goals just weren't coming.

After blanking the second frame, the Cougars fell back 3-0. With just three seconds remaining, they made it 3-1 on a goal by Katie Cameron.

The Cougars also made it into the league playoff finals against the Fort Qu'Appelle Flyers but lost two straight in the best-of-three series.

In game one at the Civic last Wednesday, the Cougars were downed 3-2.

The Flyers scored in the first minute of period one.

Down 1-0 entering the second, the Cougars fought back and took a 2-1 lead. Meagan Hamilton scored both goals, each assisted by Cameron and Paige Collopy. The Flyers tied it at two before the close of the second and notched the game winner in the third. Taelor Bayda made 34 saves in the game for the Cougars.

Poirier led the Cougars in net for the second game with 23 saves, but the Cougars were unable to beat the opposition's goalie in a 3-0 loss.

The Flyers scored two goals in the first period just 12 seconds apart, taking an early 2-0 lead. They scored once more in the second, as the Cougars were blanked, unable to score on 23 shots.

Game two in the provincial series is this Friday in Canwood.
