Estevan Bruins clinch Viterra Division title with win over Yorkton

The Estevan Bruins faced the Yorkton Terriers Saturday night in Yorkton.

YORKTON - The Estevan Bruins clinched the Viterra Division title Saturday night with a 5-4 victory over the Yorkton Terriers.

Estevan (34-7-1-3) has 72 points to lead the division. The best that second-place Yorkton (20-20-1-4) can do is 71 points, as they have 45 points in 45 games and have 13 contests remaining.

The Bruins also won the Viterra title in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Saturday’s game was a back and forth contest that started with Carson Henry opening the scoring for Yorkton with a short-handed goal 85 seconds into the game. Mikol Sartor responded with a marker less than six minutes later, and Mark Rumsey scored about five minutes after Sartor’s goal.

Kishaun Gervais scored for Yorkton with 76 remaining in the first to tie the game again.

The two teams traded goals in the second, with Caelan Fitzpatrick and Mitch Kohner scoring for Estevan, and Gervais and Colton Koran tallying for Yorkton.

Zachary Burns notched what proved to be the winner 7:33 into the third.

Boston Bilous (Estevan) and Kael DePape (Yorkton) each made 22 saves for their respective teams.

The division title came a night after the Bruins wrapped up a playoff spot with a 3-2 win over the Flin Flon Bombers at Affinity Place.

The Bruins also have the best record in the league, and sit two points clear of the Humboldt Broncos (35-12). The Black and Gold have two games in hand.

Estevan will be back on the ice Sunday afternoon when they visit the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
