With over $100,000 available in prizes the Wawota Lions welcomed 148 farmers and ranchers to their 19th Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, July 12. Sun, a break from the day's labours, and camaraderie was found during the tournament, which boasted a full day of entertainment.

Farmers and ranchers from as far away as Moose Jaw partook in the day, while many in attendance have been there for at least 80 percent of the annual tournaments if not all of them.

The day began with a buffet breakfast provided by Club 19 at Golf Kenosee, where the shotgun start began at 10 a.m. Players teed off to play 18 holes at Golf Kenosee with the chance to win a number of great prizes donated by many sponsors from the area.

Hole-in-one prizes ranged from a 2014 Silverado valued at $45,000, a Gator at $17,000, cash from the RBC, or a tractor with front end loader valued at $25,900. Though everyone attempted to win these big prizes, no one was able to come away with a hole-in-one as needed on the holes.

The day off from work culminated in a BBQ steak supper at Club 19 following the action on the course.

In all, the event was the largest to date. Usually only allowing 144 players max, two teams of four at each of the 18 holes, this year they welcomed an additional 4 players.

"It's been our biggest one ever," Tim Lincoln, Wawota Lion, stated. "It's our best turn out in 19 years."

Usually hesitant about going over 144, the Lions decided it could be done. The Lions do believe it was a success. Though the round took six hours to finish, it was a day intended more to bring camaraderie and a break from the hectic work of farm or ranch life.

Overall the day was a huge success with Lions estimating around $6,500 to $7,000 being raised to be given to deserving causes in the Wawota area.

The day, according to Lincoln, is one of a relaxed, non-business environment. From a corporate perspective Lincoln also explains that it is a good way for businesses to thank their patrons for their past business and let them know the businesses look forward to seeing them again.

The Wawota Lions are very active and in the last few months have given to the Wawota Forum for a dressing room project, Wawota Early Learning Centre, and Relay for Life. As well as annual academic awards to students at the Wawota School and over $45,000 towards the school's new gym floor.

Active every year they have given much to their community and will continue to do so.
