Two Weyburn residents took part in a unique opportunity to travel to one of the most remote yet visually stunning regions on earth.

Terra Little and her daughter Nicole Laird travelled to Reykjavik, Iceland to take part in an international Marathon for Team Diabetes.

The duo raised $6,100 each to take part in the event through sponsorships from TPZ, Dempsey Laird Trucking, Weyburn Co-op Foods and the Weyburn Curling Club. They also held several events and received individual donations to raise enough funds to take part in the marathon.

"We were two of 61 Canadians who took part and we raised a total of $425,000," said Little.

Collectively, the money raised by Canada for that marathon was the most any group has raised for Team Diabetes so far, she added.

The marathon course followed Reykjavik's beautiful coastline and starting and finishing in the heart of downtown Reykjavik.

The world's most northern capital city, Reykjavik is distinct, small, and it is home to numerous museums, galleries, restaurants, and shops.

Most of Iceland's popularity is due to its natural features that include glaciers, hot springs, geysers, active volcanoes, fjords and vast lava deserts.

"Iceland was rainy and cold, but the weather changed rapidly," said Little.

She heard about the opportunity to combine travel, running and raising money for a cause that is dear to her heart at the Queen City Marathon.

"A couple of ladies there had done an international marathon, and the seed was planted," said Little.

She added she plans to take part in the next Team Diabetes Marathon in Athens Greece in November, 2014 with her other daughter Maison Laird.
