Jr. Eagles win Bowl game, year-end awards presented

The Weyburn Junior Eagles ended their season on a successful note, securing a 26-12 win over Estevan during their Bowl game at Mosaic Stadium. Players from the team received year-end awards on Oct. 24.

After the opening kickoff, the Eagles fumbled the ball on their first play from scrimmage. Estevan drove the ball to the eight-yard line, and then fumbled with the recovery by Connor LaFoy. He turned and ran for 102 yards to score the first touchdown.

Then early in the second quarter, Kane Altwasser scored on a quarterback bootleg from the Estevan 30-yard line. Tyler Ochitwa secured a two-point convert to extend the lead.

Estevan drove down the field to score their first touchdown. In response the Eagles drove the football into Estevan's end. Another fumble by Weyburn was taken down the field for an Estevan touchdown, but in a turning point of the game the touchdown was called back because of three roughing penalties on the play.

From deep in their own end, Estevan drove the ball to their 40-yard line, and then Eagles Rhett Labbie intercepted a pass on the 50-yard line. With the ball in their possession, Kane Altwasser made a lateral pass to Tyler Ochitwa, who in turn passed downfield to Jordan Barsness for a gain of yards.

Weyburn turned over the ball on downs on the Estevan one-yard line. Then Estevan drove to the midfield, where Rhett Labbie intercepted his second pass.

Tyler Ochitwa scored the third touchdown of the game on a short run to end the first half of the game. During the third quarter, Estevan scored their second touchdown, making the game 20-12 for the Eagles.

During the fourth quarter, play went back and forth with the teams exchanging possessions that were evenly matched. Tyler Ochitwa took a 35-yard sweep to score the fourth touchdown for Weyburn. Then late in the fourth, while Estevan had control, the Eagles forced and recovered a fumble with less than three minutes remaining. They then ran out the clock to secure their Bowl game victory.

Receiving awards were Tyler Ochitwa for most outstanding player, Kane Altwasser for most outstanding offensive player, Andrew Hulbert for most outstanding defensive player, Bryden Rumple for most outstanding offensive lineman and Jake Roettger for most outstanding defensive lineman.

Connor LaFoy won most outstanding rookie, Carter Altwasser won most improved player, Baillie Jo Koszman won the peewee heart and hustle, Brayden Barsness was the gladiator of the year, and Tyler Ochitwa and the team player of the year.
