Junior Rebels open season with loss

The Southern Junior B Rebels of Assiniboia opened their season on October 5 the road, but came away with a disappointing 4-5 loss to the Silver Foxes. The Rebels got on the board just five minutes into the game with a goal by Landon Marit. The two teams exchanged goals back and forth over the next seven minutes. But the Silver Foxes pulled ahead with two quick goals 10 seconds apart halfway through the first period and added a power play goal late in the first period. The Silver Foxes gave themselves an insurance goal in the third period that sealed their victory. The Rebels had seven shots on goal in this period.
After regrouping over the first break, the Rebels came back in the second period to contain the Silver Foxes. The Rebels steadily grew momentum through the next two periods, answering with a goal in each period. Dakota Helland scored late in the second period. In the third period Trey Tendler scored with 47 seconds left in the game, but it wasn’t enough to pull past the Silver Foxes for a win.
The Rebels saw goals from four different players, including Tyde Hutchinson, Trey Tendler, Dakota Helland and Landon Marit. The Silver Foxes had goals scored by five different players. Kade Smith played all 60 minutes in goal for the Rebels.
The Rebels play in the South Division of the Prairie Junior Hockey League. They sit fourth in the standings so far, just ahead of Fort Knox. The Junior Rebels play their first home game on Saturday, October 14 against the Carrot River Outback Thunder at the Assiniboia Civic Centre.
They also play at home on Tuesday, October 17 against Fort Knox. They play their next three games on the road on October 20, 21 and 22, before returning to Assiniboia to meet the Silver Foxes on October 25, the Titans on October 28 and the Westleys on October 29 on home ice.
The Junior Rebels have a somewhat different look this year with nine rookie players joining the team. They include Phillip Decelle from Whitewood who played with the Silver Foxes last year, Austin Dovell from Carlyle, Brandon Dykema from Vanguard, Alex Hicks from Weyburn, Matt Kesslering from Viceroy who played for the Traveland RV Storm in the 2015-2016 season, Austin Neiszner who played with Fort Knox last year, Cayden Price from Swift Current, Reese Rutko from Mossbank, Tyler Hudson from Moose Jaw and Kade Smith from Regina. This year the team is coached by Al Sinclair.
