Update: Laycock advances to Tankard final; will play Knapp again

Knapp defeated Laycock in their two previous meetings.

ESTEVAN - Steve Laycock and Kelly Knapp are going to meet once again in the final of the SaskTel Tankard provincial men’s curling championship in Estevan.

Laycock picked up four points in the 10th end to defeat Jason Jacobson 11-8 in a back-and-forth semifinal that had lots of rocks in play.  

After a blanked first end, Laycock scored two in the second and stole one in the third for a 3-0 advantage. Jacobson picked up two in the fourth to pull within one, but Laycock recovered with one in the fifth to lead 5-4 at the break.

Jacobson picked up four in the sixth end to lead 6-4. Laycock tied the game with two in the seventh and stole one in the eighth to regain the lead, but Jacobson responded with two of his own in the ninth end to lead 8-7 and set the stage for Laycock’s big 10th end.

This will be the third meeting between Laycock and Knapp in the Tankard. Knapp won the first two.

He rallied from a 6-2 deficit after the fifth end to defeat Laycock 9-7 in the A event on Thursday. Then in Saturday night’s showdown between the winner of the A event (Knapp) and the B event (Laycock), Knapp emerged with a 9-4 win in eight ends to advance to the final and push Laycock into the semifinal.

The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. The winner will advance to the Tim Hortons Brier in London, Ont., from March 3-12.

Kelly Knapp has advanced to the A final of the SaskTel Tankard provincial men’s curling championship at Affinity Place in Estevan.

Knapp defeated Steve Laycock 9-4 Saturday night to punch his ticket to the provincial final. After giving up one in the first, Knapp scored two in the second and stole two more in the third. Laycock took one in the fourth, but then Knapp put up three more in the fifth and one in the sixth to lead 8-2.

Laycock trimmed the lead to 8-4, but Knapp would get one in the eighth to win.

Knapp qualified for the playoffs by winning the A event of provincials, while Laycock won the B.

Laycock will play Jason Jacobson in the semifinal Sunday morning at 10 a.m., while Knapp’s next game will be Sunday at 3 p.m.

Jacobson reached the semifinal by defeating Kody Hartung 8-3 in eight ends in a clash of the two C event qualifiers. Jacobson raced out to a 3-0 lead after the first end, and after Hartung scored one in the second, Jacobson scored one in three and stole two in four.

Hartung put up one in each of the fifth and sixth ends, and after a blank end in seven, Jacobson finished the scoring with two in the eighth.

Hartung’s tournament came to an end in the loss.
