Weyburn athlete Brendon LaBatte started as left-guard on the offense for the Riders in their game against the Edmonton Eskimos on Friday night. The Roughriders lost 20-17.
The Riders started at their 25-yard line, and got to the Edmonton 18-yard line before settling for a 25-yard field goal. The Eskimos took the ball at their 35 for their first possession, and earned a 23-yard field goal to tie the game 3-3.
During the second quarter, Edmonton took a 10-3 lead after securing a 23-yard touchdown pass. Then with 16 seconds left in the half, the Riders plunged in for a one-yard touchdown to tie the game again.
Edmonton started the second half at their 32-yard line and went two-and-out. Saskatchewan started at their 32-yard line, and ended the drive with a 27-yard touchdown to give them a 17-10 lead.
Edmonton scored a field goal to tighten the score to 17-13. The Eskimos took the lead on a 43-yard fumble return, to score a touchdown making the score 20-17 by the end of the third.
At the opening of the fourth, the Eskimos nailed a 64-yard punt single in the opening minutes to gain another point. Then Edmonton scored a six-yard touchdown run, making the score 28-17.
The Riders attempted a touchdown with 3:40 left in the game, but it was waved off as officials said the receiver was out of bounds. The Riders finished the drive with a 17-yard field goal to make the game 28-20.
In the next rush by the Eskimos, the Riders held Edmonton back from gaining any yards. They got the ball back at their 25-yard line, but were picked off by the Eskimos defense.
After six games in the regular season, the Riders are tied for last place in the west division, with Calgary.
The Riders are a .500 team, with three wins and losses. The Roughriders will be in B.C. to face the Lions on Sunday, Aug. 19. The Lions are tied for first place in the west division with the Eskimos.
Announced on Monday, a new set of commemorative stamps will celebrate the upcoming 100th Grey Cup, which will be hosted in Toronto in November. The set includes nine stamps, eight featuring an iconic moment or game chosen by each CFL team plus one depicting the storied Cup itself.
