Red Wings strong after four-game winning streak

The Red Wings are coming off a four-game winning streak, improving their standings to second place in the Sherwood division of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

While in Melville on Oct. 23, the Red Wings captured another shootout victory over the Millionaires. The score was 4-3.

Scoring was opened by the Red Wings during a power play at 4:04 in the first period, scored by Jack Kennelly and assisted by Kevin Mann. Then during the second period, Jesse Ross scored at 6:46, assisted by Keegan Bruce and Coltyn Sanderson, and the Bombers picked up two goals to tie the game.

Melville scored their third goal during a power play at 16:32 in the third period. The Red Wings tied the game when Ross scored at 18:38 during a power play, assisted by Ryan Whitell and Bruce.

This forced the game into an overtime period, and after neither team scored a shootout was necessary. Weyburn shot first for each round, with Ross scoring and no goal from either Bruce or Kennelly. Melville's three scorers were unable to notch any goals.

Both Brett Teskey and Mitch Kilgore shared time in the net. The first two goals were scored on Kilgore, who stopped 24 out of 26 attempts. Teskey came in as relief, stopping six out of seven Melville attempts.

The Red Wings faced against Flin Flon on Oct. 20 and Oct. 21, winning twice against the Bombers. During the first game, the Red Wings won 6-2.

A strong 2-1 lead was gained by the Red Wings during the first period, with scoring by Ross at 8:28, assisted by Johnson; and Bruce during a power play at 16:16, assisted by Sanderson and Struthers.

Scoring was doubled by the Red Wings in the second period, as they notched four goals. Sanderson scored during a short-handed goal unassisted at 0:59; Whitell scored at 1:43, assisted by Kennelly; Bruce scored during a power play at 3:43, assisted by Whitell and Sanderson; and Sanderson scored at 6:43, assisted by Ross. Neither team scored during the third period.

Kilgore gained the win in net, stopping 30 out of 32 attempts. The Red Wings scored five of their 24 attempts off one Flin Flon goaltender, and then one more goal off the replacement.

The following night in Flin Flon, the Red Wings took a 6-3 victory. This time, the Bombers led after the first period, scoring their three goals, while Weyburn was only able to gain two. These were scored by Ross during a power play at 4:53, assisted by Bruce and Struthers; and Sanderson at 19:47, assisted by Johnson and Bruce.

After neither team scored during the second period, Weyburn came on strong during the third period scoring four times. These were scored by Struthers during a power play at 5:16, assisted by Mann; Ross during a power play at 5:45, assisted by Sanderson and Johnson; Williams at 9:56, assisted by Harbor; and Kennelly unassisted while short-handed at 12:08. Teskey gained the win in net, stopping 21 out of 24 attempts.

The Red Wings hosted Melfort on Tuesday night, game action will be detailed in next week's Review. On Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 the Red Wings will be on the road again, traveling to Melfort the first night and Humboldt on the second night.

In other Red Wing news, information on several former players who currently play for different levels of their career were released by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

Former Red Wing playing in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is Craig Cornelsen, at Briercrest. Playing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) division one are Preston Shupe and Torrey Lindsay, both for Canisius; Kyle Haines and Andrew Perrault, both at Lake Superior; Rhett Bly at Merrimack; and Drew George at Sacred Heart.

Playing in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) are Brayden Nargang, Tyler Penny, Brock Appleyard, Carter Selinger, and AJ Whiffen, all in Regina; and Stephen Sims, St. FX.
