The Weyburn Red Wings (9-19-2) continued their up-and-down season (mainly down) over the weekend extending their winless streak to five games.

On Dec. 11, the Wings hosted the Notre Dame Hounds, with hopes of responding from a Sunday 4-3 shoot-out loss to the LaRonge Ice Wolves.

The Hounds got off to a 3-0 lead by the early point of the second frame, with power play markers from Dillion Schwartzenberger and Sam Aulie in the opening frame and an even-strength tally from Jared Martin early in the second.

The Wings responded quickly in the second with two goals from Adam Pulliam and new centreman Ty Mclean, cutting the Hounds lead to 3-2.

That was as close as the Wings would get. The Hounds notched another power play goal at 17:08 of the second, going up 4-2 and holding on in the third for a 4-3 win.

Ty Reichenbach picked up the win for the Hounds, stopping 26 of 29 shots. Jean-Philippe Boucher picked up the loss for the Wings, turning away 27 of 31 shots.

The Wings were back in action Friday night in Humboldt, where they got outplayed in a 4-1 loss to the Broncos.

"We didn't have our legs going and stood around," said coach, Darcy Pindus, about the loss against the Broncos. The Wings were outshot 38-23 in the defeat.
Saturday the Wings were in the Battlefords to battle the North Stars. The game was a defensive struggle, with neither team able to put a puck past the opponents goaltender. The contest was decided in a shootout, where Luke McColgan decided the game with the lone shootout marker. Battleford won 1-0.

"We played a strong game. It could have went either way," said Pindus.

Sunday the Wings continued their losing ways in Kindersley, blowing a 3-2 lead after two periods. It took Kindersley 1:30 to tie the game and take the lead in the third period.

"We played hard but made a few mental mistakes in the third period and it cost us. It's not a lack of effort," said Pindus.

The Red Wings are now off until Dec. 30 and coach Pindus hopes that the time off will give the team time to recover from injuries and be ready to turn things around in the new year.

The team is missing their two towers on defence, Carter Struthers and Tyler Borstmayer, and have had a young group replacing the veterans.

"It's tough when you are playing five rookie defensemen and Sam Williams has been missing the last four games."

Here is to hoping 2013 brings luck and less struggles for the Red Wings.
