Weyburn Comp Eagles to host Saskatoon Aden Bowman for 5A provincials

The Weyburn Comp Eagles remain undefeated after beating the Balgonie Greenall Griffins 33-7 on Saturday afternoon at Darold Kot Field.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Comp Eagles remain undefeated after beating the Balgonie Greenall Griffins 33-7 on Saturday afternoon at Darold Kot Field, and will now host Saskatoon Aden Bowman Bears for the 5A SHSAA provincial championship on Saturday, Nov. 11 in Weyburn.

The Saskatoon team defeated the North Battleford Comp 49-9 on Saturday to advance to the provincial finals.

“It’s pretty exciting to be going back to the Provincial Championship game. Our guys have been looking forward to another shot after a tight loss last year to BJM last year in the final,” said head coach Jody Kerr.

“It’s going to be a tough week of practice as the Aden Bowman Bears are a very strong football team and they have had a great season as well. We will see how the two teams match up on Saturday.”

At quarterback, Conner Kerr went nine for 17 for 117 yards and one TD.

For the receivers, Jarret Hayward had four catches for 48 yards; Isaiah Sanderson had three catches for 44 yards and a TD, and Nolan Uhren had two catches for 25 yards.

The top defenders included Max Crane with six tackles and an interception; Conner Kerr with four tackles and an interception; Owen Istace with seven tackles; and Spencer Bell had five tackles and two QB sacks.

“Yeah it was a great game. There were a few mistakes by us that we don’t usually make, so we had some adversity to work through,” commented coach Kerr.

“Huge thanks to everyone that came out to support our squad on Saturday. We hope that the park can be packed on Saturday for the Championship game at 1 p.m. It’s been a great ride with lots of home games and we can’t wait to get things going versus the Bears,” said Kerr.

In the past week also, longtime football coach Darren Abel received a Rider Recognition Award from the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation, presented in recognition of his “contribution towards amateur football in the province of Saskatchewan.”

In a social media post, Abel said the award “is quite an honour”, and he wanted to share it with the many coaches he’s worked with in Weyburn over the years.
