WEYBURN – The Hawkeye Security Weyburn U17 Wild fastball team had a great weekend at the Saskatoon Hustler Classic, with come-from-behind win via an inside-the-park grand slam by Kyla Stang to win the tournament’s gold medal.

This win was against the Battleford Bandits, who are the defending provincial champions and undefeated team for the last year.

The Weyburn team was down 8-4 going into the bottom of the seventh, and the Wild rallied to score five runs capped off by the grand slam to win it all.

Zoey Thompson pitched a complete game for the win.

The U17 Wild will next play on Sunday, June 12, when they host the Regina Royals for a double-header at Jubilee Park’s diamond 5. Game times are 4 and 6:30 p.m.

The previous weekend, the rain held off at the 2022 Sharon Knott Memorial Tournament in Regina, so the U17 Wild were able to face-off in the championship game against the Pilot Butte Storm.

The game started off with a bang with the Wild scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

With great pitching from Lainey Levesque, strong team defence and the bats thumping once again, the Wild ended the weekend with a 7-0 win to claim the gold medal.

The coaches were super proud of the ways the girls played on both weekends, and even when things weren't going their way, they dug in, persisted and came out on top by working hard to get first overall.
