I might have carpal tunnel by now

It's hard not to like Estevan's chances, with the success of football in this city in such a short time, and the disastrous aftermath of this year's flooding, including the damages suffered by Estevan Minor Football.

But it all comes down to one 24-hour period, which means things like being busy at work, going on vacation or even going to a movie can be game-changers.

You might not be a football fan or a SportsCentre viewer, but this kind of exposure on a national network will be a good thing for all of Estevan, not to mention the TSN broadcast will highlight other stories from the Energy City.

The one downside to the SportsCentre visit is that Dan O'Toole warned me, in response to last week's column, that he will bring fish soup for us if we win.

We can probably swallow that in exchange for everything else, though.

If Estevan doesn't win, we can be proud of all the minor football and high school volunteers who made this happen and have gotten the word out. Their community spirit can serve as an example for the rest of us.

For fear of forgetting a few, I won't thank you individually for your hard work, but you know who you are.

Speaking of hard work, there will be a lot of it in the coming months for Estevan Woodlawn Golf Club.

Local media were given a tour of the flood-ravaged course on Friday and it was like stepping into a disaster zone.

It had all the trappings of a desert area, aside from the cacti. Almost all of the green was gone, replaced by silt and mud as far as the eye could see. The campground next door is in the same boat.

Some areas were like quicksand, while others still had standing water.

The 18th green may have been the biggest shock - it looked like a crater, almost as if someone had dropped a bomb on it.

It will take a long time to restore Woodlawn to a state where it looks anything like a golf course.

The club will need the support of its membership and the broader community to get things going again for next year. They don't know yet how much of the damage will be covered by insurance, but the remaining costs won't be cheap.
