Coming up with a column subject this week was a challenge. In other words, I don't have any ideas of my own and took suggestions from my Facebook friends. Everyone seemed to have decent suggestions, and rather than choosing between them and risking hurting someone's feelings, I'm just going to comment on everyone's column idea individually. But I won't name names, to keep things anonymous.
1) Generational gap: parents just do not understand the appeal of tattoos, and the change in what's appropriate for suitors. I know all about this. I'm not allowed to get a tattoo or a piercing until I graduate from university. Apparently they're not attractive? As for the change in what's appropriate for introducing dates to parents, I can't speak much for this. The tactic among my sisters and I has generally been to tell scary stories about my dad, thus keeping this from being a problem. When my parents ask why guys don't come up to the door and introduce themselves, we just explain that they're terrified of Dad, whether or not it's true. He seems to find that satisfying, so everyone wins.
2) Facebook and Twitter addictions. I don't know anything about this. "Addiction" has such a negative connotation and I don't see anything bad about spending time on Facebook. I mean, the first thing I do in the morning is check my social networks. Then when I get to school, I immediately sign into Twitter and Facebook. And then check them continuously throughout the day. Nothing about this spells addiction. Nothing about this isn't positive. Right? Right?
3) U.S. Congress has decided that pizza is a vegetable and belongs in school cafeterias. OK. U.S. Congress has time to decide what counts as a vegetable, but cannot figure out their budget problems? Also, this seems like a huge waste of time. I wonder which pizza company was whispering in Congress's collective ears? Good thing there aren't bigger problems in the world right now than whether or not pizza is enough of a vegetable to be served in schools.
