Letter to the Editor

The 2011-2012 school year is rapidly coming to an end. While academic learning is always at the forefront, many other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities sponsored by schools and school community councils enrich the lives of our students.

The 2011-2012 school year is rapidly coming to an end. While academic learning is always at the forefront, many other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities sponsored by schools and school community councils enrich the lives of our students. I wish to compliment the work of our school families in making the school experiences of our students the best possible.

In particular, I want to commend the efforts of all in our schools who are dedicated to reducing the incidences of bullying and peer harassment. You have certainly gone the extra-mile in organizing and sponsoring activities to educate students about the negative impact of bullying as well as how to handle it if a victim and ways to deal with those responsible. "Pink Days" and anti-bullying initiatives were undertaken in the past year by schools in sub-division 2 (Arcola, Carlyle, Manor, Maryfield and Wawota) as well as other division schools. Numerous communities have also bought in and publicly supported these initiatives. Their support is critical and commendable.

The mandate of our public school system is to open our schools to every child, and to accept all students regardless of race, religion, economic situation, intellect and physical ability. It is the firm goal of the South East Cornerstone School Division to educate students of every description and interest in our schools in an atmosphere of mutual respect so they can reach their full potential. The work to ensure this atmosphere is present is much appreciated by the board.

I sincerely thank teachers, administrators, support staff members, student leaders and school community councils for your excellent work. You richly deserve the coming holidays and may you well enjoy them.

Harold Laich,

Wawota, SK.

(Board Member, Sub-division 2, South East Cornerstone School Division)
