Christmas is over a month away, but the season gets underway for many people long before the 25th of December, with special events that put people “in the spirit” of the holiday.
Weyburn is no exception to this, with special events already lined up for the next little while.
It’s appropriate that one of the very first events will be the Festival of Trees, the major annual fundraiser for the Family Place.
The setup period of Christmas trees for the Festival will go from Nov. 18 to 20, and the Festival will be open for the public to view from Nov. 21 until the day of the live auction, Nov. 28, at Barber Motors.
It’s appropriate that this is the first Christmas event because in many ways, Christmas is a season of giving. In addition to selling of all of the decorated Christmas trees will be a wide assortment of silent auction items, and all of the proceeds will go to help the Family Place offer their services and programs to families of the Weyburn area.
What a great way to kick a season like this, by helping families have a better Christmas, and helping this amazing facility continue to offer the programs that they have, such as the Mini-Go program for preschool children, and the parenting programs that help young families.
After the Festival, there will be a number of fun events, such as Quota’s Carol Festival on Sunday, Dec. 1, at Grace United Church; the kickoff of the first-ever Sparkles light displays at River Park, to run from Monday, Dec. 2 to Jan. 4, 2020; and the Parade of Lights, to be held on Thursday, Dec. 5, starting at 7 p.m.
In keeping with the spirit of giving, the Salvation Army will be starting their kettle campaign on Nov. 28, and this will continue through December right up until Christmas Eve.
There will be volunteers manning the kettles at the food stores and at the liquor store (and more volunteers are needed, in fact), so give generously when you see a kettle while you’re out and about.
The CP Holiday Train will rolling into Weyburn, also to benefit the Salvation Army’s food bank, on Monday, Dec. 16.
The train will arrive from Estevan around 5:45 p.m. at the CP Rail yard, and the show is scheduled to go from 6 to 6:30 p.m., with performers Meghan Patrick, Tanika Charles and Kelly Prescott. This is a major boost to the food bank, as there is a donation made by the CP Rail employees, and food bank items are brought and collected on the site.
These are just a selection of what events will be going on in this city this Christmas time. The important theme to be thinking of is, “it is more blessed to give than to receive”. Think of those who are less fortunate this season, and give as you are able.
