Alphonse Hubert Fossenier

Alphonse Hubert Fossenier passed away peacefully Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the age of 85 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Hubert and Yvonne Fossenier; son, Keith Fossenier (1965); brother, Frank Fossenier; sister, Isabelle Veillett; father and mother-in-law, Emil and Agnes Fradette; sisters-in-law, Rose (Gordon) Brown and Doreen Fradette; brothers-in-law, John, Roger and Gilbert Fradette and Henry Mazenc. Alphonse was born March 2, 1932 in Radville. They lived on the farm at Radville until 1941 when he moved with his mother and sister to Weyburn. Alphonse attended Assiniboia School and the Weyburn Collegiate. In his youth he placed hockey and from 1947 to 1948 he played amateur midget with the Jaycees and they won the championship for Saskatchewan that year. Alphonse joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1949 and served in the Korean War as a gunner on a ship. He received a discharge in 1953 and began farming. On September 20, 1954 he married Helen Simone Fradette in Radville. Together they purchased the family farm and neighbouring quarters and lived there from 1954 until 1965. Alphonse and Helen built a new home in Radville and moved into it. Alphonse farmed on the weekend but also worked as a nurse orderly and maintenance man at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Radville from 1965 to 1989. He was indispensable to the Sisters at the hospital, looking after their car and driving them to Regina. In 1998 they sold their farm and moved into Weyburn in 1999. Alphonse enjoyed playing pool at tournaments, going for coffee with friends and tinkering in his garage. While living in Radville he was also a volunteer firefighter. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian and president for 16 years. Alphonse was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus and and an active member of the Catholic Church both in Radville and Weyburn. Alphonse spent many years as an adult acolyte serving at regular Sunday masses as well as funeral masses. Alphonse and Helen took their first real holiday together in 1976 when they went on a Caribbean Cruise. They took a second vacation to Cuba in 1984 and from 1990 to 1994 they enjoyed their winters in Arizona. Alphonse will be missed by many. Alphonse will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Helen Fossenier of Weyburn; daughters, Connie Fossenier of Stoney Rapids, SK and Giselle Fossenier of Saskatoon; grandchildren, Kevin (Rickie Lee) Fossenier, Elizabeth (Vaughn) Lambe, Amanda Grohn (Ron Lapointe), Troy Stock, Bradley Stock (Tegan Brazzoni), Arron Fossenier, James McLeod; great grandchildren, Ryker & Kinley Fossenier, Aiden & Asher Lambe, Julie & Jett Grohn; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alex (Laurette) Fradette, Maurice (Carol) Fradette, Armand Fradette, Lucille Mazenc, Theresa (Robert) Nimegeers, Emelia (Wayne) Hunter, Yolanda Fradette and Arlene Fradette; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, May 10, at 11:00 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Father Francis Plaparampil celebrating. Private family interment followed the funeral lunch at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn.
