1922~2017
Elva Jean Janet Turner

Elva Jean Janet Turner passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at the age of 94 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Madeleine Campbell; husband, Donald Turner; daughter, Sharon Turner; son-in-law, Alex Miller; sisters, Myrtle Brady and June Carr; brother, Thomas Campbell and brothers-in-law, Vernon Domes, Russell Carr, Lawrence Brady and Wallace Turner. Elva was born September 13, 1922 at Ogema, to Madeleine and Thomas. She was the eldest of the family of four girls and one boy. Her father was a section foreman for the CPR and consequently she lived and received her schooling in several small communities. She would eventually graduate from grade 12 in Radville. On October 4, 1940 Elva married Don Turner, a young farmer from the McTaggart area. They celebrated 66 years of marriage and raised two daughters, Sharon and Shirley. Being a farmer’s wife meant new jobs, not only did Elva prepare meals but she delivered them to the field as well. She learned hand signals when trucking grain and how to herd cattle into the pasture. However her favourite new occupation was gardening and she regularly planted a huge garden which she shared with friends and relatives. Elva froze, canned and pickled the vegetables and canned and made jam with the strawberries and raspberries. When Don and Elva moved to Weyburn in 1966 her yard was her pride and joy. In the summer she spent many hours, watering, fertilizing, weeding and nurturing her beautiful flower beds and pots. Elva also enjoyed entertaining and cooking, and was known for delivering casseroles and cookies to neighbours. Elva could produce a delicious meal on very short notice. She belonged to the Weyburn Horticultural Society, Eastern Star and was secretary of the Weyburn Curling Club and the Weyburn Agricultural Society. Elva was grandma, to three grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. She could be seen in the crowd cheering them on at sporting events, watching and listening to Christmas concerts and music recitals. When she could no longer attend she would inquire what each child was involved in. Don and Elva were avid curlers, playing in leagues and bonspiels. In 1977 Elva played third on the team that represented Saskatchewan at the Dominion Senior Ladies Championship in Halifax. Together Don and Elva began collecting curling pins as well as other curling memorabilia and the curling museum began in the basement of their home. When they could no longer give tours and take care of it, they donated it to the city of Weyburn. Together they travelled to Sweden, Scotland and United States as well as many Canadian cities. Elva is remembered by her daughter, Shirley Miller; grandchildren, Shelley (Keith) Miller-Hertes, Bruce (Shannon) Miller, Aaron (Gerri) Fettes; great grandchildren, Nikole (Michael) Dorsch,  Cody Miller, Logan, Kyle and Justin Hertes, Jordan (Mureca) Hnatiw, Demi (Jeremy) Gibson, Brandon Hnatiw, Mathew and Riley Fettes; seven great great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Beckham, Bennett and Brielle Gibson, Austin, Liam and Gavin Dorsch; sister, Marjorie Domes; sister in law, Sheila (Roy) Jones as well as numerous nieces, nephews,  relatives and friends.  A Funeral Service was held Saturday, July 8, at 11:00 a.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, with Reverend M. Barnabas officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn.
