He was the oldest of eight children. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters: Marie (Ed) Zeeb, Loretta (Keith) Slimmon and Joan (Gordon) Gill; and brother Albert Schmidt. Jake is survived by his wife Joan Schmidt; two sons Wes (Lorna) Schmidt and Doug (Carrie) Schmidt; step grandson Jordan (Sarah) Warford;) brother Walter Schmidt; sisters Sylvia Walliser and Cathy Miller; sister-in-law Jeanne Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews. As a young boy, Jake left school to help out on the farm until he was conscripted to the army at the age of 18. After returning home, Jake tried his hand at various occupations such as truck driving, custom combining and farming. In 1954 Jake met Joan Webb.
