Mom lost her love affair with life on January 6, 2012 just 5 days after celebrating her 90th birthday with family in Kelowna, BC. Predeceased by her parents and her husband Henry. Mom is survived and deeply missed by her sister Helen, sons Ronald and Russell, grandchildren Robert, Dean, Dana, Ronald, Morgan, Christian, Richard, Tyler and great grandchildren.
Born January 1, 1922 in Vonda, the elder daughter of Peter and Agnes Slywka, Mom was a bright, enthusiastic student who skipped grades and loved solving math problems. When she had to leave school after grade XI to help with the family business she was devastated, but did not complain. It was in Vonda that she met and married Henry in 1941 with whom she enjoyed 57 years of happiness until his death in 1998. During their first years of marriage they moved around Saskachewan, eventually settling in Weyburn in 1949. Mom enjoyed life in Weyburn where she had friendly neighbours and, with her great sense of humour, developed many enduring friendships and acquaintances. Mom also enjoyed golf, curling, bowling, playing bridge, gardening, reading and music. She loved to dance and have fun and for many years she and Dad square danced in and around the Weyburn area. Always one to accept a challenge, she always said that "if they keep score I want to play". We remember Mom's passion for golf which she absolutely loved from the first moment she swung a club. A longtime member of the Weyburn Golf Club, some of her happiest memories were of golfing with family and friends. Her last game in 2010 (score to remain a family secret) was in Kelowna with her sons. In 2008 Mom moved into a retirement residence in Kelowna, to be near family, where everyone enjoyed her sense of humour. Following Mom's wishes she was cremated and will be interred in the spring beside Dad at Green Acres Memorial Gardens in Weyburn. Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.
