We announce with great sorrow the passing of Steve Lazurko, late of Weyburn, on February 4, 2012, at the Regina General Hospital at the age of 85 years. Steve was predeceased by his parents, Mike and Agatha Lazurko; brothers, Fred and John; sister, Mary Lash. Steve is survived by his wife Margaret, Weyburn; children: Diane (Eugene) Byblow, Calgary, AB, David (Anne) Lazurko, Weyburn; grandchildren: Sara, Anita, Logan and Maddy Lazurko; two brothers, Harry (Rosie) Lazurko, Yorkton, Paul (Elsie) Lazurko, Yorkton; family members: Rose (Frank) Loos, Weyburn, Norman Schmidt, Campbell River, BC, Peter Vogel, Courtenay-Comox, BC, Marion Zerie, Horizon, as well as several nieces and nephews. Steve was born on September 25, 1926 in the Jedburgh area to Michael and Agatha Lazurko. While growing up Steve enjoyed sports like baseball and Ukrainian dancing when attending St. Joseph's College in Yorkton. Later he attended barber college in Moose Jaw and then moved on to Weyburn where he set up shop. Steve barbered there for over 50 years. In 1954, Steve married Margaret Schmidt of Weyburn. They had two children, a daughter Diane (Gene) Byblow and a son David (Anne) Lazurko. They have four grandchildren, Sarah, Anita, Logan and Maddy. He leaves behind two brothers, Harry (Rosie) and Paul (Elsie) of Yorkton. Steve and Margaret purchased a house in 1956 and have lived there ever since. They have a huge backyard where Steve took pride in filling it with trees, flowers and birdhouses. Steve enjoyed spending time in his backyard listening and watching nature. Steve was an avid Weyburn Redwings fan and supported the team by being a season ticket holder faithfully for over 50 years. Steve was a man of few words, quiet and reserved by nature but his ready and winning smile will be missed by his family. Prayers were held on Tuesday February 7 at 6:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn. Funeral mass for Steve was held on Wednesday February 8 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn, with Fr. Gerry Bauche, celebrant. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery Weyburn.
