The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce kicked off their 2012 WEYBEX awards on Feb. 1.

"These awards give the community a chance to support and recognize business and individual excellence in Weyburn," said Jeff Chessall, Weyburn Chamber of Commerce president. "The sponsors are eager to support this event which will showcase the very best of what our business community has to offer."

"Our WEYBEX awards are aligned with the Saskatchewan Chamber's provincial ABEX awards, and in fact in 2010 two Weyburn businesses were finalists at the provincial level," said Jeff Richards, chamber manager.

ABEX finalists in 2010 included United Centrifuge, for community involvement; Southern Industrial and Truck, new or expanded business and business of the year; and Don Kraft, business leader of the year.

This is the fifth year for the WEYBEX awards, which are held as a biannual event. A complete list of past winners from 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010 are available from the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce website.

The deadline for nominations is May 4. Nomination forms are available at the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce office.

The WEYBEX awards are open to businesses, organizations and individuals in the City of Weyburn and immediate area.

These awards will be presented during a gala evening which will take place on June 8 at McKenna Hall in Weyburn.

There are seven awards for which businesses can be nominated. Business Hall of Fame, sponsored by New Age Electronics, recognizes pioneer and cornerstone business leaders demonstrating long-term excellence and contributing to the economic well-being of Weyburn and area.

New or Expanded Business, sponsored by Sunrise Community Futures, is awarded to a business established or expanded in the past two years and demonstrating exceptional performance in a number of categories.

Community Involvement, sponsored by SaskEnergy, is awarded to a business demonstrating outstanding performance in contributing to recreation, amateur sports, arts and culture, education, charitable or non-profit groups and business development of the city.

Golden Service, sponsored by MNP, recognizes a local business demonstrating outstanding customer service or hospitality.
The Business Leader of the Year, sponsored by Cenovus Energy, is awarded to a person who exemplifies the qualities of a business visionary.

Finally, the Business of the Year award is sponsored by the Weyburn Co-op Association, patron sponsor of the WEYBEX awards. This award is open to any business operating in Weyburn for at least three years as of December 31, 2011. All nominations for the other award categories, excluding business hall of fame, will be considered for the Business of the Year award.
