City police kept busy with mischief, break-and-enters

During the week of Jan. 1-7, the Weyburn Police Service responded to a total of 69 calls for service. The calls varied from noise complaints to false alarms, mischief, break and enters and harassing phone calls/text messages.

On New Year's Day, police received a complaint of a person or persons setting off fireworks in the city; police attended and were unable to find those responsible. The public is warned that it is against the city's bylaw to set off fireworks in city limits and does carry a fine.

Police were called to assist in removing an intoxicated male from a residence on Jan. 1; the male was removed without further incident.

A 911 call was received on New Year's Day of an intoxicated male threatening to harm himself; officers attended and were able to remove the individual. It was found that the individual was on conditions not to consume alcohol; the individual was charged with a breach of conditions and was lodged in cells.

A residence on Foster St. was broken in to on Jan. 1; the matter is still under investigation.
Weyburn police were called to a break and enter; the home owner was away from Dec. 26 until Jan. 7. When she returned home she found that a window was smashed and someone had been in the home, the matter is still under investigation.

South Country Equipment reported on Jan. 6 that a grain auger was stolen from their property; the matter is still open.

Three complaints of unregistered vehicles parked on City property came in, all three of the vehicles were ticketed and towed. City Bylaws are in place for parking and penalties vary in fines.

A person made a complaint of having his tires of his vehicle slashed on Jan. 2; the matter is still under investigation.

A report of a hit and run came in from a grocery store parking lot on Jan. 3; a witness was able to provide a plate number for the other vehicle. The owner of the other vehicle was contacted, damage to both was minor, and information was exchanged and was told to report the accident to their insurance company. If you do not notify the owner of the other property and/or leave the scene of the accident, you can be charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

A hit and run occurred on Third Street on Jan. 3. The owner saw another vehicle back into his while pulling out of the parking spot. The owner got the plate number of the vehicle, charges are pending.

An accident occurred at Souris Avenue and Government Road on Jan. 3, resulting in one vehicle having to be towed.

Police were called to remove and unwanted guest from a motel on Jan. 3; the room was paid for and the unwanted guest was removed.

A semi travelling north off of South Hill on Jan. 3 caught an Access cable line and pulled it down; police attended, but were unable to locate the vehicle.

City police received a report of a hit and run on Jan. 4; damage was done to the rear fender and tail light of the owner's truck, the matter is still open.

Police are still getting complaints of people driving through bus stop arms; not only is this dangerous, it does carry a fine.

Police were called to remove an unwanted intoxicated male from outside a home on Jan. 5; the male was arrested for being drunk in a public place and lodged in cells. When being searched the male was found to be in possession of marijuana and charged under the Criminal Code.

A call was received from an upset female on Jan. 5, as she had received some very threatening messages. The matter is still under investigation.

Police were called to a local establishment to assist with removing unwanted patrons on Jan. 5, resulting in one individual being lodged in cells.

City police responded to a call of a stolen vehicle on Jan. 6, and the investigation found that an employee had used the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to the owner.

Police were requested at a local establishment on Jan. 6 because people were beginning to get out of hand. Police attended and everything calmed down.

A male was stopped and brought in for breath tests on Jan. 6; the individual failed and was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and exceeding 0.08.

Police received a call of a man urinating behind a downtown business on Jan. 7; the man was located and charged with depositing human waste in public.

Police attended the schools and spoke to the new drivers about safe driving practices in winter conditions. Police have also dealt with many complaints of threatening or inappropriate electronic communications (texts, e-mails, etc.); these can also result in charges, so use them responsibly.

Over the reporting period between Christmas and New Year's Day, the Weyburn Police Service dealt with 83 calls for service. Christmas and New Year's, which can be unpredictable and busy, were for the most part uneventful.

Police are investigating a theft of a diesel-powered generator/heater from a residence on First Avenue SW on Boxing Day.

The same day, the city police received a report of the theft of a newer pickup truck, trailer and quad. Subsequent investigation showed that the complainant, while highly intoxicated, left the vehicles at a friend's place and did not recall that at the time.
City police responded to a total of 10 calls on New Year's Eve. They ranged from two minor domestics and liquor tickets to noise complaints.
On New Year's Day, police were called to an early morning residential break-in. The matter is still under investigation.
The police were called to a domestic dispute on New Year's Day. A 24-year-old man was arrested for breaching a court order and was held in custody.

City police were called to a residence on Dec. 27 regarding a complaint of a man who had broken into the house and who was now passed out on the couch. A 21-year-old Lake Alma man was taken into custody and is facing a charge of mischief.

Police received a report of a break and enter to a residence on Dec. 28. At this time nothing appears to have been taken and the investigation is ongoing.

City police are investigating two unrelated complaints of threats being uttered on Dec. 30. One case was mediated and was among family members. The other case is ongoing.

Although the weather has been superb, police wish to remind motorists that the sidewalks and streets, especially during the early morning and nights, are quite slippery and extra driving caution is urged.
