Mayor Debra Button was reappointed as vice-chair of FCM's Standing Committee on International Relations by the president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), Karen Leibovici.
The standing committee advises FCM's 75-member Board of Directors on the national issues facing cities and communities.
"I am pleased to have Mayor Button play a key role in our team, and I look forward to working together in the year ahead to advance the interest of local governments," said Leibovici.
"This is my second appointment as the vice-chair," said the mayor, noting that as the new president, Leibovici reviewed all appointments before making the reappointment of Mayor Button.
The mayor took on chairing a subcommittee, which was how the City of Weyburn became involved as a municipal partner with Ukraine in a five-year project to help improve the municipal political system in Ukraine.
"Other projects are coming forward as well, and the Ukraine project is about halfway through," said Mayor Button.
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is the national voice of Canada's municipalities, speaking for almost 2,000 cities and communities representing 90 per cent of Canada's population. Its national board is comprised of municipal leaders from across Canada (including Mayor Button, who represents Saskatchewan on the board), and meets quarterly to set policy priorities.
FCM's successful advocacy with the federal government has brought significant benefits to Weyburn over the past five years, from the GST refund to the permanent federal gas tax fund, and now the federal government's new, long-term infrastructure plan to build the roads, bridges, water and transportation systems Canada needs to support its families, businesses, and national economy.
