The Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) revealed on June 26 they are prolonging their reopening date.

Under Phase 4.2 of the Re-open Saskatchewan plan, museums are accessible beginning on June 29.

Yet, the RSM decided to postpone their reopening date until new safety and cleaning protocols are instituted.

This additional time in anticipation of the official reopen date will also give the RSM the occasion to further improve their exhibits and programming.

“We know how creative the exhibit designers, artists, skilled craftspeople and programmers are,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “They took the opportunity to work in the gallery during the closure and the results of their efforts, including creative new exhibits in the CN T.rex Gallery, will bring more wonder and enjoyment to this world-class exhibit.”

The RSM is fostering a plan to safely reopen this summer, with more details expected to be communicated in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, online programming at the museum had been chocked with celebratory activities such as National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21.

Note: the T.rex Discovery Centre will not reopen in 2020 as part of the RSM’s revised operating plan.

After discussions with key partners and stakeholders, everyone concluded the T.rex Discovery Centre in Eastend, a distance of 222.3 kilometres west of Assiniboia, shouldn’t unlock their doors this year.

The T.rex Discovery Centre usually has short seasons, typically opening during the May long weekend and remaining open until September.

With the impact of COVID-19 and an even shorter season in the foresight, the museum’s organizers concluded it wasn’t practical to have the centre opened until May 2021.
