The Estevan Salvation Army’s food bank is going to remain open amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but another valuable service is going to be discontinued.

The thrift store is going to close March 18-31. After that time, it will be re-evaluated. Ronza Reynard, who is the director of ministry for the Salvation Army, said the directive is coming from their regional headquarters in Toronto.

The Salvation Army will continue to accept donations for the thrift store during this closure.

In addition to the food bank, the family services division is still operating. Both are accessible through telephone appointments.

“People just need to phone in, do an over the phone application for a food hamper, and arrangements will be made for when they can pick them up,” said Reynard.

The tax clinic that was to be offered by the Salvation Army has also been put on hold until further notice. Those who already have appointments will be contacted to reschedule, as some appointments were already set up for March 20.

All of the Salvation Army’s staff is still there, she said. They’re just doing something different.

If people need assistance, they can give the Salvation Army a call. Reynard said the Salvation Army recognizes this is a difficult time for a lot of people, and they’re here to help the community. They expect the food bank is going to be busy in the coming weeks.
