A longtime RM councillor and volunteer and board member of the Weyburn Red Wings, Ron Fellner, passed away on Saturday.
He was councillor for Division 2 in the RM of Weyburn since 2004, and was also manager of the Weyburn Utility Board, which provided city water to rural area residents.
Fellow RM councillor Dan Cugnet said of Fellner, “Ron was extremely dedicated to the improvement and betterment of the Rural Municipality of Weyburn. He worked and advocated tirelessly on behalf of all its residents, regardless of how big or small the issue of the day was.”
He spoke of Fellner’s love of the community in his passions and his volunteer efforts as well.
“I think anyone who knew Ron, realized how passionate he was about the RM and the other many things he was involved in within the community through his lifelong commitment to volunteerism. His contributions to Weyburn and area have been significant, and his experience, knowledge and voice will be missed around the council table.”
His longtime involvement with the Weyburn Red Wings was also a major passion in his life, as he could be heard from the stands during games, or could be found at a table selling tickets for team fundraising efforts.
“He was a devout fan from the first year of hockey,” said Brent Stephanson, president of the Red Wings hockey club, and added of his years on the club’s board of directors, “He was definitely not shy about expressing is opinions on the board. He was passionate, and loved the Red Wings heart and soul, whether he was on the board or selling 50-50 tickets. He was definitely an ambassador for the Red Wings.”
He added that Fellner was tireless in volunteering to sell tickets for the team, even going to community events in the area.
