Four great races took place at the Estevan Motor Speedway Saturday night just before a major storm was threatening to hit the area.

A former member of the Estevan Bruins who was one of 16 people killed in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash last month is a finalist for the NHL’s Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award.

Seven athletes from the Airbourne Gymnastics Club in Weyburn attended provincial championships in Prince Albert on May 11-13, and brought home a total of seven medals. In the junior Olympic level 3 (2007) group, there was one athlete competing.

A swarm of local swimmers took part in a camp held last weekend at the RM of Estevan Aquatic Centre. The camp, which also had members from clubs in Watrous, Melfort, Regina and Oxbow, was led by coach Jeff Toth from Regina’s Flatland Swimming Club.

Weyburn Element Beavers AAA Mosquito played two doubleheaders on the weekend. On Saturday, they beat the Lumsden Cubs 9-8 in their first game, and then lost 20-13 in game 2.

Track and field districts at the Estevan Comprehensive School this week will have a huge contingent of home athletes. A total of 52 athletes from ECS were able to qualify for districts after a host of great performances last week at their home track.

Neither rain nor wind nor muggy weather was going to slow down athletes at the track at Estevan Comprehensive School Wednesday, as athletes competed at districts to qualify for provincials.

Estevan’s Jayden Dudas is possibly going to be a part-time Maple Leaf Junior Tour star this year.

The Bantam Voltz had themselves another dominant game last Wednesday at Affinity Place against the visiting Weyburn Thrashers. The Voltz won 10-0 in South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League action.
