MOOSE JAW — The Moose Jaw Adult Concert Band is set to celebrate a decade of music-making with a special anniversary concert on Friday, May 16, at A.E. Peacock Collegiate’s Centennial Auditorium.
The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m.
Under the direction of longtime conductor Darrell McKinnon, the ensemble will present a program featuring audience favourites from its 10-year history.
“Our theme this year is music that we've played in previous years — kind of some favourites from each year,” said Kurt Gillett, the band’s administrator. “Because this is the 10th year that we've been together as a band, it's our 10-year anniversary concert.”
The band, comprising approximately 30 adult musicians, has been rehearsing weekly at Vanier Collegiate since early February. Members range from former music teachers to individuals returning to their instruments after years away.
“For some of us, it's been years since we've played in a band,” Gillett noted. “So for them, it was just extra fun to pick it up again — it’s almost like riding a bike.”
Gillett encouraged community members to attend the performance, and for former band students to consider joining the band.
“If there's anyone out there that wants to pick up an instrument again after a while, or maybe you played an instrument but you'd like to try a different one, then this might be your opportunity to come out and see what the band is all about,” he said.
Tickets are available at the door and will cost $20 apiece for adults and $10 each for students. Children aged five and under will be granted free admission when accompanied by an adult. Discounted advance tickets will also be available through SaskTix.ca starting the week of May 5.
