You may spot a funnel cloud today, if you can stand the heat

On these hot August days, watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others.

SOUTHWEST SASKATCHEWAN — Environment Canada says conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds Saturday in a block of southwest Saskatchewan. The area includes Lashburn, Kerrobert, Biggar, Kindersley, Rosetown, Eston, Leader, Swift Current, Maple Creek, Gull Lake and Eastend.

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms, says the government weather agency. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.  If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada.

Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances. Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.

Meanwhile, the province is experiencing a heat wave, with a heat warning for most of the northern two-thirds, which is looking at temperatures near or in the 30s. Environment Canada says the temperatures should moderate on Monday.
