LA RONGE – The wildfire has reached the community of La Ronge, destroying the Rona and Robertson’s Trading Post stores.
Derek Wrightson posted a photo saying Rona is gone and Robertson’s Trading Post was on fire.
Likewise, Canadian Challenge Sled Dog posted on June 4 that fires destroyed the legendary Robertson’s Trading Post Stores and Rona in the heart of La Ronge.
“The firefighters and emergency services, supported by volunteers are working tirelessly and selflessly to protect and save whatever they can in this and surrounding communities,” said Canadian Challenge Sled Dog on social media.
On Tuesday, La Ronge Fire Department said, “We are up against a monster.”
“The last 24 hours have been chaotic,” posted the La Ronge Fire Department. “We would like to sincerely thank all fire departments, private contractors and volunteers who have been working tirelessly throughout these last two days. We are doing the best we can fighting for our communities.”
La Ronge Fishing Adventures said, "We are absolutely gutted to see that two iconic buildings have been lost in La Ronge. Rona and Robertsons Trading have succumb to the fire that has now started to burn into town. There are reports of some homes that have been lost in both the north end of town and in the central area of the Tri-community. Our hearts are heavy and incredibly sad. The amount of frustration building in regard to how this whole complex is being dealt with is growing. This is the third time a fire has burnt into our community and it seems that not one lesson has been learnt, in fact the reactions seem to betting worse."
On June 3, residents of La Ronge, Air Ronge, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, and those within a 20-kilomtre radius were forced to evacuate.
On June 2 a wildfire emergency alert was issued by La Ronge, Air Ronge, and Lac La Ronge IR due to the wildfire.
