It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to put together a ‘Hot Corner’ column simply due to the fact that I believe the local sporting events held throughout the city are more important than my opinion column.

YRHS Raider all-star linebacker Jon Muir will not be putting away the pads once he graduates from high school this summer. Instead, the 6’0”, 185-pound middle linebacker will simply be changing jerseys.

In the City of Yorkton there are two sports in particular that instantly come to mind: One, of course, is hockey, where Yorkton has picked up provincial championships like a small child picks his nose; far more often than is expected.

The Yorkton Legion Track Club attended their first outdoor track meet of the season recently. In total the team recorded 16 podium finishes, five of which were of the first place variety while six were second and five were third.

Last Thursday night the Yorkdale Royals did something that not many Yorkton elementary schools have been able to do: they won both the boys’ and girls’ Yorkton Elementary School Sports Association (YESSA) basketball championships.

Five members of the Yorkton Pirates Tennis Club took to the road to compete at the Provincial Indoor Open at Saskatoon’s Lakewood Indoor Tennis Centre from April 23-26.

The Parkland ‘AAA’ Expos opened their inaugural Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League (SPBL) season up with a pair of road games Saturday afternoon in Swift Current against the hometown Indians.

The 17th annual Prairie Wildfire Taekwondo Challenge was once again a success, despite Yorkton Kee’s Taekwondo opting to move the event forward some six months in the hopes of drawing in new athletes.

Normal grandpas take their grand kids out for supper sometimes. They’ll go fishing with their grandchildren (if the child wants to); they’ll maybe even spoil them with some presents here and there, if their parents aren’t looking of course.

Roby Sharpe is almost never silent. The boisterous, rambunctious, happy-go-lucky head coach of the YRHS senior football team and president of Yorkton Minor Football is well known throughout the community for his loud voice and infectious spirit.
