LA RONGE – A 40-year-old Saskatoon man - who was released on bail while facing a murder charge – has been denied bail a second time Friday in La Ronge Provincial Court.
In June 2022, Alvin Thomas was wanted on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Marisha Hoksbergen of Cumberland House. He was apprehended by Prince Albert police in late June 2022 and then granted bail in a Prince Albert court June 28, 2022.
Earlier this year, RCMP said they were looking for Thomas after he breached his court-ordered release conditions. He was located and apprehended on Jan. 26 in the Cumberland area through a combined effort by Cumberland House RCMP, Carrot River RCMP, Nipawin RCMP and the RCMP Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team [WEST].
His murder charge stems from an incident on May 29, 2022. Cumberland RCMP say that they got a call that day at approximately 11:55 p.m. about an injured woman and found Marisha Hoksbergen. She was pronounced deceased at the local clinic.

Hoksbergen’s obituary says she leaves behind two young sons.
She worked for the Cumberland House Cree Nation and the Village of Cumberland House as a Fire Suppression Crew Worker. She also went fire-fighting. She worked as a road roller and also operated heavy machinery for her father’s construction company. She was a very hard worker and accepted any challenging tasks during work and accomplished each challenge, said her obituary. She was a cashier at the Chief Island Community Store and was very welcoming to everyone and always had a big cheery smile.
"She enjoyed spending time with her children and family as well as her many friends," said her obituary. "She easily made friends everywhere she went."
Hoksbergen loved to travel, won Snowsled Drag Racing competitions, and enjoyed painting. She loved to cook and would post photos of her meals to Facebook and Snapchat.
A preliminary hearing for Thomas is set for April 27 in Cumberland circuit court.
