Council nominee feels strong about community

He wants Humboldt to be a place more people want to visit and live. Marc Dredhart, who has lived in Humboldt for just over two years, will be one of the names on the October 24 City Council ballot. Dredhart moved to the community after getting a job at the PotashCorp Lanigan mine. Since moving to Humboldt, Dredhart has wanted to be more involved in his community and thought running for city council would help him."I'm usually trying to get involved in the places I live," said Dredhart. "In other communities I have been involved in (organizations) like the volunteer fire department and hockey league." He decided to run for council after a neighbour suggested it was something he should try. "The more I thought about it, the more it interested me," said Dredhart. He would like to make a difference in the community. "It seems like it is small town but trying to be big city and they don't know how to go about it," said Dredhart. One of the things he would like to do is promote Humboldt in various ways. "I've heard a lot of feedback about the lack of promoting shopping locally and promoting the city properly," said Dredhart. "(I want) to help promote the city to attract more businesses and to get the community the infrastructure it deserves." If voted in, he would like to see a policy in place where the City would try to promote shopping locally.Dredhart would also like the city to promote tourism more. "I come from an area where winter tourism is really big, like snowmobiling," said Dredhart. He would also like to look at the infrastructure in the city. "I would like to come up with new and better ideas for getting the infrastructure up to par," said Dredhart. He explained there were three water main breaks on his street this summer that was inconvenient and he has also heard from many people that their vehicles have had to go to the shop because of the bad roads. "Another thing that I see is the youth, when they leave high school, they want to leave (the community)," said Dredhart. "It seems to be hard to attract them to stay around the area." Dredhart believes with better tourism and infrastructure, people will want to stay in the community. He looked at many different communities before choosing to move here in 2010. "Humboldt seemed to have a good base and core for my kids and my family to grow," said Dredhart. "It seems to be right there, but it needs a little more push to make it even better." He hopes to make a change in the community and become more involved if elected. "I just want to get involved more and I hope to meet more of the community," said Dredhart. "I thought it would be a great launching pad to initially break that ice." He has a new viewpoint on the city and how to improve things. "I have a lot of fresh ideas and I've lived in a few other places before that I've seen good and bad," said Dredhart. "Hopefully I can bring some of that experience here."
