The results are in. After a close race between the 11 candidates, a new Humboldt City Council was elected on October 24. Mayor Malcolm Eaton was elected by acclamation, but will be joined in the council chambers by new councillors Sandy Weyland, Larry Jorgenson, Linda Mattock and Roger Nordick and incumbents Leon Fleischhacker and Rob Muench. Although the other five candidates did not get voted in, Eaton explained the community is grateful to everyone who ran. "A big thank-you goes out to everybody who let their name stand," said Eaton. "It takes a lot of courage and is much appreciated by the community." Fleischhacker was thrilled both he and Muench were re-elected."It is nice to see that the citizens are happy with the previous council," said Fleischhacker. "It is good to see that they are happy with the way we are going and I'm looking forward to working with the new council." The new council members are excited to be elected. "People have elected a strong council and I look forward to working with the people who were elected tonight," said Linda Mattock. "I feel grateful (to everyone who) came out and voted and voted for me," said Jorgenson. It was a very close race, even though only 28 per cent of the population exercised their right to vote. Results of the polls were: Leon Fleischhacker, 1,041 votes; Rob Muench, 961; Sandy Weyland, 745; Larry Jorgenson, 687; Linda Mattock, 627; Roger Nordick, 620; Owen Hopfner, 612; Larry Sunderland, 581; Kenton Flavel, 548; Francis Kunz, 406; Marc Dredhart, 146. "We thank all the candidates on behalf of the community and congratulate the winners," said Eaton on behalf of the City. "There were some very close numbers." Eaton is excited to work with the new council and see their new perspective on issues. "Once the official results are out, we'll be ready to go to work right away," said Eaton the night of the election. The official swearing in of the new council will be on November 13 and the new councillors will be going through training sessions soon to help them step into their new roles. "We have an orientation program planned, we have some transition activities planned and brief activities planned over the next couple of months," said Eaton.
