He wants to make Humboldt a place people want to move to. Kenton Flavel, a resident of Humboldt for over 11 years, will be one of the names on the ballot during the October 25 city council elections. Flavel and his family moved to Humboldt in 2001, after researching a place to move where he and his wife could raise their children."We figured out where we wanted to end up and Humboldt was the place we chose," said Flavel. "We figured Humboldt had everything we needed to raise our kids and provide opportunity for them and ourselves." He believes they made the right decision. "When we looked at it, we felt it was a very safe and progressive community with a strong business sector, good health care, schools and recreational facilities that would provide a great place to live work and raise our children," said Flavel. Flavel has always been interested in serving his community. While his children were growing up, he served two terms as Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce (HDCC) director, two terms on the board of directors of Humboldt Minor Hockey Association and coached minor hockey for five years.""I've always been involved on boards of community organizations in one sort or another," said Flavel. Since his children have graduated from high school, he has the time and energy to give back to the community in a different way. "I see a lot of good people stepping down from city council and I want to give back to shape the community for the future," said Flavel. "I want to continue to make people want to move here, work here, grow up here and retire here. We need to continue to have the opportunities and services that make people want to live and work here." Flavel sees a few main issues in the community he would like to address if elected. "I've talked to a couple of the existing councillors and found out what the city is doing," he said. After talking to current councillors and the mayor, he came up with a list of important priorities. "I want to continue to support the upgrading of our infrastructure - the water, sewer, roads and sidewalks - in a well planned and cost effective manner. He would also like to continue to support organizations and programs that benefit citizens of all ages and support the continued development and long-term planning to deal with the needs of our growing community."I guess with a background from the HDCC, I would like to work to continue to work to make a Humboldt a business-friendly city in order to aide in the expansion of existing business, development of new business and the creation of jobs," said Flavel. His last priority is to make the city accountable to its citizens. "I will work to improve communication and make the operation and administration of the City of Humboldt open and accountable to the citizens it serves," said Flavel.
