A former resident of North Battleford has won the 2013 YWCA Women of Distinction Education Award. The award was presented in Saskatoon May 24 toArlene Shiplett, who has been an active horn teacher and performer for almost 30 years.

A Grade 1 teacher at St. Mary School in North Battleford has been awarded the Master Teacher Award by the Saskatchewan Mathematics Teachers' Federation.

The Battlefords Photo Club held its monthly meeting May 7 at the Allen Sapp Gallery. The theme for the montly photo challenge was "a drop of water," with Adele Perrett's photo entitled "Deliciously Wet" winning the challenge.

The church building that stands at the corner of 13th Avenue and 102nd Street in North Battleford is 100 years old this year. It is now known as Third Avenue United Church, but in 1912, when construction began, there was no United Church of Canada.

Mary Evelyn Brawn (nee Wright) was born on July 12, 1920 in Campellton, N.B. Her father died in 1922 from war injuries. Without a principle breadwinner, Delia Rose (Ev's mother) and Ev suddenly found themselves without a family income.

St. Mary's Community School Essential Skills for the Workplace Program, North Battleford has been awarded one of six Saskatchewan Literacy Awards of Merit for its encouragement of lifelong and life wide learning.

There Speers and District United Church held their 20th dinner theatre April 5, 6 and 7. There was a full house for each performance. This year's play was called Homecoming by Leeann Minogue.

Every year at this month, I remember my conversation with my late father. He told me a true story about himself as a little boy. He was born in 1903 and his father passed away from an over-enlarged heart in 1904.
