The Jackfish Lake Sectional Duplicate Bridge Tournament just completed its 15th year in Meota.

This tournament is sponsored by the North Saskatchewan Unit 575 and hosted by the Meota and Battlefords clubs. We are all part of the American Contact Bridge League (ACBL), which oversees all "sanctioned" duplicate bridge clubs and tournaments in North America.

This Sectional has gained a reputation over the years for offering great hospitality and high calibre bridge in a resort setting, and is popular with bridge players mainly from Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. Readers will appreciate that putting on such an event, without numerous hotels and restaurants from which players can choose, is a challenge. Tournament chairpersons Ray and Marnie Davie would like to thank those community members who for the past 15 years have offered their homes as bed and breakfasts and their cabins for rental. Without their support, this tournament would not have happened.

Also supporting the event is the Steak Pit at the Meota Hotel by feeding out-of-towners on Friday evenings. Mike Carlson, initially, and later Pearl Hawkins, have partially catered the Saturday suppers and Sunday lunches. Club members have held work bees to prepare salads, desserts and snacks. For years players have raved about the food. Some say they come to eat first and play bridge second.

Anyone wishing to learn the great game of duplicate bridge can contact club managers Jette Dasilva in Meota or Marg Dyck in North Battleford. To get a taste of what this game is about, go online to www.acbl.org and click on "Learn to Play Bridge."
