Waist high in fava beans, farmers learned a lot about this crop as well as about soya beans July 30.

Things have been a bit slow this summer. The annual indoor rodeo will be taking place Aug. 21-23 with the amateur bull riding taking place on the Thursday evening. Entries have been filled for this event.

Thursday evening, during the intermission, the little cowpokes can try their hand at mutton busting. They have to be five or six to enter. The following days' intermissions will find the greased pig catching with the seven- to nine-year-olds on the Friday evening and the 10-to 12-year-olds on the Saturday. These entries are almost full at this time. For further information and to volunteer to cover some of the shifts for the event, contact Danielle Troesch.

Congratulations to the trip of the month winner for July, Doreen Blocha and Bob Hujdic of North Battleford, and to Ryan and Alyssa Roach of Edam for winning the $100.

Now that we have dealt with the Edam Community Centre business, we can continue with the brides to be of the area. August bride-elect, Kelcey Roach, was honoured at a bridal shower May 31 at the Legion. Joining Kelcey at the head table were her mother Michelle Roach and future mother-in-law, Sharon Kachmarski.

Kelcey, eldest daughter of John and Michelle Roach, will marry Alex Kachmarski Aug. 23 in Devon, Alta. The young couple will be making their home in Devon, Alta. Kelcey is employed as an accounting assistant at Express Employment Professionals in Edmonton and Alex is a project manager at Dresser-Rand, also in Edmonton. Congratulations to you both and may you have a long and happy marriage.

August bride elect, Renee Blais, was honoured with a bridal shower July 26 at the Legion. Renee was joined at the head table by her mother Tammy, grandmothers Kay Savard and Juliette Blais as well as her future mother-in-law Theresa Collins.

Renee, only daughter of Robert and Tammy Blais of Vawn, will marry Jeremy Collins, son of Theresa Collins and Aaron Goaheen, Aug. 16 in Vawn. The young couple will continue to make their home in Edam where Renee is employed by Arnold's Sand and Gravel and Jeremy is employed by Husky Energy. Congratulations to you both and may you also have a long and happy marriage.

On July 30, I had an invitation to take part in the Canola Plot Showcase Forum hosted by Cavalier Agrow. This is the 10th annual showcase and it is also the 10th year that the Schaefer family have been instrumental in its success. Following the ride out to the plots on the semi, we were treated to information from each of the companies that had canola featured.

We learned about the changes that were coming with these improved breeds and where their programs are heading. From the canola plots, we moved over to the fava bean and soya bean plots. Following the tours of the plots, we returned to the starting point and enjoyed an awesome lunch.

The afternoon found those who registered put into seven groups to take part in the canola labs. Here we learned more about clubroot, Truflex ( a new trait in Roundup-ready canola), insects (both beneficial and non), phosphate deficiency, sulphur and nitrogen deficiency, boron deficiency, rates and timing of Liberty, as well as the STORM seed treating system. When you have a farmer in the group who knows what questions to ask, then it is a winning situation for everyone.

Taking part in the virtual tour were the following: Polywest, Kobelsky Kustom Spraying, BASF, Nexus Ag, Koch Fertilizer, Nutri Ag, Monsanto, Bayer, Cavalier Agrow, DuPont, JTL Industries, Storm, Monsanto BioAg, Brett Young, Canterra, Syngenta and ATP. Each of these companies sponsored incredible door prizes that went home with some happy people.

I would like to thank the Cavalier Agrow crew for an awesome day, and I highly recommend going if you are able to. The results from the trials that are being done this year can be found on the Cavalier Agrow website. Be sure to check those out following harvest this fall.

In the meantime, may everyone have a safe and profitable harvest and we also wish that the great white combine stays away from the area; there have been some other spots on the Prairies that have not been that fortunate.
