Gopher seen and talk of calves - spring around the corner

As hard as it may be to believe, spring is just around the corner. Last week Henry Konopelski saw the first gopher playing along the side of Highway 378. Hopefully the crows will soon be back because we usually get a crow storm after they arrive.

The Battlefords and Area Horticultural Society is starting to prepare for spring activities. It has been a long winter with nearly endless snow and the arrival of seed catalogues was a big note to brighten some days.

The Marsden Recreation Board held a snowmobile rally and chili cook-off Feb. 23, from the Marsden Community Hall. It was a poker-hand type rally with the lucky winners drawing tokens out of a bag at each checkpoint.

Catch the 10 Whist was played at the Maidstone Drop In Centre Feb. 18 with Jean Hartman providing lunch. High score went to Dorothy Schwartz and low to Ray Hartman. Bingo was played Feb. 20 with Margaret MacEachern doing the calling.

Bittersweet time as hockey season winds down

As I drove home from the last hockey practice of the year, it was weird and wonderful that the sun was still shining in the sky. The days are getting longer, the temperature is rising and the ice is melting some days.
